To make a more inclusive workplace and successfully recruit and retain employees with a disability your organisation should consider and apply the following recommended actions.

Adopt an organisational commitment to inclusive employment.

  • Ensuring your leadership team have inclusion on the agenda, and that inclusion is identified in the organisations core values. To help with you with this process, use the 10-point self – assessment check list from the Global Business and Disability Network. It is quick and will assist your organisation to gauge your inclusivity for people with disabilities in your business.
  • Develop an organisation wide disability Action Plan
  • Lead workplace change by building a network of staff committed to promoting inclusive employment. Access staff professional development here.

Improving recruitment and retention practices:

  • Review your recruitment policies  and proceedures with an inclusion lens and identify where positive changes could be made; The Australian Network on Disability organisation has numerous and informative fact sheets you can use as a resource to develop your organisation’s recruitment plan to accommodate disability.
  • Contact a Disability Employment Services. These organisations assist in finding the right person for your business, and will provide you with information, support and guidance along the way;
  • Provide entry level opportunities such as work experience placements, traineeships and/or work customisation. See Employment Pathways

Create a more flexible workplace:

Adopt a flexible workplace approach which will assist employees with a disability. This could include job shares, part-time positions and working from home arrangements. All of these can benefit your entire team as well as make your organisation a more attractive workplace for all.

Provide education and training in the workplace:

Disability awareness training and unconscious bias training for all staff will support a broader understanding of disability for your team and result in better customer service for your clients.

Adapt the workplace to cater for people with disabilities

Making adaptations  to your space to ensure access and inclusion for all, benefits everyone and can be as simple as adapting signage, including handrails in bathrooms or installing a ramp. See Action Planning.

Here is an 8-point plan you might want to follow, (adapted from the Australian Network on Disability)

  1. Develop a pathway for PWD, this involves an individual task analysis of the job that is required
  2. Develop a relationship with a local DES provider
  3. Provide training for co-workers and supervisors.
  4. Agree on a reasonable timeframe for reviews.
  5. Implement a support plan that is agreed upon by all players
  6. Plan and carry out workplace adjustments.
  7. Brief co-workers as required.
  8. Ensure a process of feedback to the employee is provided for and that ongoing feedback is provided
