Inclusive Towns Launches in the City Centre
Inclusive Towns received a very warm welcome as it launched into the Bendigo City Centre on Weds 12th December. Set up in the shade by the children’s playground in the Hargreaves Mall the team were joined by local service providers who were on hand to discuss access and inclusion with community members.
The event was opened by Mayor Councillor Margaret O’Rourke who thanked the 2018 participating businesses and spoke about the importance of inclusion in Greater Bendigo and the positive gains to Bendigo made through inclusive tourism.
Guest Speaker Josh Hercus shared his personal story of growing up with a disability, some of the difficulties he faced in entering the workforce revealing real insight into how an employer understanding of disability does not always match up to the reality, and his positive experience of working with Inclusive Towns in its Pilot year.
The Access Creative Studio performers then took to the stage and delivered a solid 20 minutes of songs and dance routines which was very well received by all in attendance. The performers then joined forces with the Inclusive Towns Support Officers and community members to drop in invitations to the businesses in the mall inviting them to participate in the project in 2019.
